Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial

Member of Parliament Rick Casson joined a large delegation of International Association of Fire Fighters, Lethbridge Local 237, in a tribute to colleagues who lost their lives in the line of duty over the past year.
During the September 11 Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial, held on the steps of Lethbridge City Hall, a fire bell reverberated 123 tolls, while an equal number of names belonging to Canadian and American firefighters were recited during the ceremony, which recognized four of Letbridge’s own. Three of the local firefighters died of cancer related to their firefighting duties, while another suffered a fatal heart attack after fighting a fire.

Productive 39th Parliament moving to second session after prorogation

The opening chapter of Canada’s 39th Parliament could conclude as early as next week, following Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s recommendation to the Governor General that Parliament be prorogued and recalled on October 16 to commence the Second Session with a Speech from the Throne.
Having sat on the government side of the House since February 2006, I heartily concur with statements made by the Prime Minister during his September 4 prorogation announcement that the First Session of the 39th Parliament was exceptionally productive, especially for a government in a minority situation.
To reiterate PM Harper’s comments, Canada’s Conservative government has “delivered on the major commitments we made to Canadians during the 2006 election. After our first 19 months in office…Canada is united, our government is clean and our economy is strong.” Prorogation will offer us the opportunity to launch the next phase of our governing mandate, which will continue on making Canada a stronger nation. |

Earthquake in Peru - Support for impacted Canadians

On August 15, 2007, an earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale struck the coast of Peru, south of Lima, and was followed by strong aftershocks. A State of Emergency has been declared in the region of Ica, which has been particularly affected (especially the cities of Ica, Pisco and Chincha Alta). The earthquake caused hundreds of deaths and injuries, and major damage to buildings and roads (including the Pan-American Highway). In many areas, power and telephone services have been disrupted. There is a risk of more aftershocks in the near future. |
Summer break busy time for MP Casson

August will see me out of the Lethbridge constituency for a major portion of the month, kicking off this past week with national caucus in the cradle of our nation’s confederation, Charlottetown, PEI.
In my capacity as Chairman of the Standing Committee on National Defence I have accepted an invitation from the Canadian Space Agency to attend next week’s launch of the Space Shuttle Endeavour mission STS-118 from NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre. In addition to having the thrill of watching a launch, a highlight of this trip will be meeting Dr. Dafydd (Dave) Williams of the Canadian Space Agency who will be returning to space for his second mission.
My schedule for August 15-26 takes me overseas to events marking the 65th Anniversary of the Dieppe Raid with remembrance ceremonies and events being held at a number of sites in northern France.

Federal government invests over $416,000 in region’s emerging biofuels industry

Bill C-252, a Private Members’ Bill (PMB) sponsored by Lethbridge MP Rick Casson, became law after receiving Royal Assent from Governor General Michaëlle Jean at Rideau Hall. Bill C-252 establishes the terminal illness or critical condition of a divorced parent as a “physical change in circumstances” for the consideration of variation or rescission custody orders.
The bill will give divorced parents who are terminally ill or in critical condition the chance to see their children as long as such access is judged by a court to be in the best interest of the children concerned.
First introduced in the House on May 4, 2006, C-252 successfully cleared the final legislative hurdle in Parliament on Tuesday when the Senate unanimously passed the bill through Third Reading in the Upper House.

For the first time in this country, doing something about climate change will mean action, not more talk. On April 26 Canada’s government introduced ‘Turning the Corner’, a national plan to reduce greenhouse gases and air pollution.
