Canada/Alberta jointly fund Magrath water treatment system upgrade
February 6, 2010

MAGRATH -

Rick Casson, Member of Parliament for Lethbridge and Cardston-Taber-Warner MLA Brocye Jacobs announced over $3.6 million in joint federal-provincial funding under the Building Canada Communities Component to upgrade the Magrath Water Treatment and Supply System.

The Governments of Canada and Alberta will each invest over $1.8 million in this project, with the Town of Magrath contributing an equal $1.8 million share to the estimated $5.4 million project.  Upgrades to the Magrath Water Treatment and Supply System will improve the quality of drinking water for residents and increase the number of households equipped with residential metering.

“I commend the municipality for being in a position to take advantage of the Building Canada fund and our provincial partner for its cooperative efforts to ensure this program moved forward,” Casson stated. “This project will create employment and upgrade an aging infrastructure system that will improve the quality of life for the citizens of Magrath long into the future.”

This project is just one example of the commitment of both governments to strengthen the Alberta economy and improve the quality of life for its residents.  The Governments of Canada and Alberta have taken steps to advance projects and flow money faster for targeted infrastructure projects in Alberta communities in the 2010 construction season.

"Continuing to invest in infrastructure is one of the Alberta government's priorities, and this funding will boost Alberta's economy, create jobs and benefit the Magrath community," said Broyce Jacobs, MLA for Cardston-Taber-Warner. "Alberta is pleased to continue to work in co-operation with the federal government on this and other shared funding programs."

In expressing appreciation to the federal and Alberta governments funding disbursement, Magrath Mayor James Murphy said, “This grant will be a great boon and up lift to the town of Magrath and to its neighbours in the county of Cardston. It will create new employment opportunities and open up prospect that will significantly benefit Magrath and this surrounding region.”
